Proxisense has been awarded £551,638 through Innovate UK’s CR&D competition to develop LiquiSensor™ for real-time, in-line monitoring of solvents and reactions in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Project SENSE – Solvent Evaluation using a Novel System for measuring thermal Energy exchange – is a two-year project led by Proxisense, in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
LiquiSensor™ uses thermal sensing to provide rapid information about changes in liquid composition and process state. The project will develop the technology from its current TRL 4 stage, improving system sensitivity, software robustness and user experience to support its use in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
A key focus of the project is demonstrating LiquiSensor™ in a pharmaceutical manufacturing process and generating the data needed to demonstrate its performance and support future regulatory approval and commercialisation.
By providing real-time, in-line process information, the technology could help manufacturers make better-informed process decisions, reduce reliance on time-consuming off-line analysis and reduce solvent waste and the resources associated with conventional process monitoring.
The project is part of Innovate UK’s £13 million CR&D competition, which is supporting 14 projects focused on environmental challenges in pharmaceutical production, including waste reduction, emissions control and energy efficiency.
Project SENSE runs from February 2025 to January 2027.
