The thermal product sensor can accurately measure the condition of oil. It is able to detect minute levels of contamination and debris including:

  • water
  • metallic particulates (both ferrous and non-ferrous)
  • non-metallic particulates, such as ceramics).

Oil condition and contamination monitoring and analysis

The thermal product sensor in an excellent measure of the change in oil condition. It is able to detect the level to which oil within a system has been thermally stressed and the level present of both saturated and unsaturated water. It can therefore asses the rate at which lubrication properties are deteriorating and help to determine and alert when oil changes are required.

The oil condition and contamination sensor can be deployed in-line in a moving fluid or as a sump plug. Particles as small as 5 microns are readily detectable using the thermal product technology. The sensor has also demonstrated its ability to detect silicon nitride contamination particles to 10 microns.

The accompanying electronics hardware and software package for the system is capable of tracking debris count and particle size. It is able to predict the time at which build-up is unsustainable and when the oil and bearings will need to be changed.
